Resource description:

Following the catastrophic flooding that occurred in November 2021, SNC-Lavalin Inc. (SNC-Lavalin), on behalf of the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (ENV), conducted a waterway evaluation program to assess water and sediment quality in the Nicola River between Merritt and Spences Bridge, BC, and the Coldwater River between Merritt and Juliet Drive Junction, BC. The Program was developed to provide continued support for BC’s Flood Disaster Recovery Program

Data collection infoField monitoring instruments were calibrated according to equipment manuals prior to monitoring. All equipment (electronic probes/meters) was decontaminated using a phosphate free detergent solution prior to each measurement to minimize the potential for cross-contamination. Measurements of pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were collected at each location using a handheld water quality meter (YSI). Surface water samples were collected directly from the river using a pole sampler (Wheaton), either by submerging the laboratory-supplied container directly into the water or by collecting the water in a larger container and transferring to the laboratory-supplied containers. Dissolved metal samples were field filtered using a syringe and 0.45 μm membrane during sample collection. Sediment samples were collected by hand (i.e., trowel), within approximately 0.2 m of ground surface and on the river bed, just above the water line. All samples were immediately placed in laboratory-supplied containers with the appropriate preservatives (where applicable) and transferred to an ice-chilled cooler. The target rate for the collection of blind field duplicate samples was 10% (i.e., 1 duplicate for every 10 samples collected). All samples were stored in ice-chilled coolers and were transported to the laboratory for analysis under chain-of-custody control.
